Category: Ingredient

1.

Origin: Asia, Middle East, India

History: 5000-2300 BC Sumerian cuneiform writings

The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi

“Bridegroom, let me caress you,

My precious caress is more savory than honey,

In the bedchamber, honey filled,

Let us enjoy your goodly beauty,

Lion, let me caress you,

My precious caress is more savory than honey”

- The sexual union of Inanna and Dumuzi was the prototype of the Sumerian custom of the ”sacred marriage.” which was ritually performed at the New Year festival and guaranteed the renewed growth of all human, animal and plant life

Summary:

Her older brother Utu tries to set her up with Dumuzi, the shepherd, but she initially rebuffs him, preferring the farmer. He assures her that his parents are as good as hers and she begins to desire him. Her mother, Ningal, further assures her. The two consummate their relationship and with their exercise in fertility, the plants and grains grow as well. After they spend time in the marriage bed, Inanna declares herself as his battle leader and sets his duties as including sitting on the throne and guiding the path of weapons. At Ninshubur’s request, she gives him power over the fertility of plants and animals. (Wolkstein and Kramer pp. 30-50)

10th-13th C. AD

mentioned in aphrodisiac recipes in the Kama Sutra:

Kama Sutra (Part 7, Chapter 1, Sutra 45)

“If ghee (clarified butter), honey, sugar, and licorice in equal quantities, the juice of the fennel plant, and milk are mixed together, this nectar-like compositionis said to be holy, and provocative of sexual vigor, a preserver of life, and sweet to the taste”

Kama Sutra (Part 7, Chapter 1, Sutra 25)

“Anoint your penis, before lovemaking, with honey into which you have powdered black pepper, long pepper and datura- you will completely satisfy your woman”

Kama Sutra (Part 7, Chapter 1, Sutra 37)

“Honey-sweetened milk in which the testicles of a ram or goat have been simmered has the effect, when drunk, of making a man as powerful as a bull”

Kama Sutra (Part 7, Chapter 1, Sutra 39)

“Pumpkin seeds ground with almonds and sugarcane root, or with cowhage root and strips of bamboo, and stirred into honeyed milk, have the same arousing effect”

Kama Sutra (Part 7, Chapter 1, Sutra 42)

“The sages say that wheat-flour cakes baked with honey and sugar and sprinkled with the powdered seeds of pumpkin and cowhage give one strength for a thousand women”

Kama Sutra (Part 7, Chapter 1, Sutra 43)

“The yolk of a single sparrow’s egg stirred into rice pudding that has been thickened with cream, wild-honey and ‘ghee’ has the same invigorating effect”

15th C.

Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Nafzawi

The Perfumed Garden

Chapter 17: Prescriptions for Increasing the Dimensions of Small Members and for Making Them Splendid

“Another remedy consists in a compound made of a moderate quantity of pepper, lavender, galanga, and musk, reduced to powder, sifted, and mixed up with honey and preserved ginger. The member after having been first washed in warm water, is then vigorously rubbed with the mixture; it will then grow large and brawny, and afford to the woman a marvellous feeling of voluptuousness.”
